Pipes
On to another project.. what is going on here? Not to keep you guessing we are building a rainwater collection system. After months of study and planing we are adding this to our tractor barn which has 2400 square feet of roof.
Every inch of rain on our tractor barn produces over 2,000 gallons of water. This water is perfect for irrigating our garden with clean unprocessed water.. no chemicals or salts. Also, in an emergency we have water storage.
We are digging out an area behind the barn for a 30,000 gallon water tank. It’s HUGE. To collect water properly you need a few things like a leaf guard that obviously keeps leaves out of the system and the next part is called the first flush. For the size of the roof we need to collect about 10 gallons of water before letting it into the tank. Thats what the big pipe is coming down the side of the barn. The reason for the first flush is to get dust, bird stuff etc. that might collect during the dry time before letting that into the tank.
We engineered this and it seems to be working. We’re waiting for the tank delivery which should be towards the end of July. We still have a lot of work to do to prep the area. Our friend is helping with the excavation. Once the tank is installed we can pipe it downhill to the hoop house and if needed bring the water into the house but it will need a lot more cleaning to be safe for human consumption.
